The White Queen Lives

Remember the White Queen from the book ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’?  Well, I think she lives near here.  The whole universe is white, and has been for some weeks now.  The only color exists in the sunrise, the moon, and the blue sky.  Everything else is covered in a thick layer of hoarfrost.  Its almost like being in an old  Christmas movie, where the trees are all completely white, in true overdone Hollywood style.  I expect to see Jimmy Stewart around every corner.  Except that this is real, and natural.  But its so complete as to look quite strange.

Full Moon with Jeep, Morning

Its been cloudy of late, with lots of wind, and severe wind chills.  Today was -40, with a wind chill of -49.  (Last night someone said, ‘Its minus 30 out there, with a wind chill of minus one million’.)  The propane has gelled up and my shower was cold.   It turns out the idea of a cold shower is not as cold as an actual cold shower!  Although the sky is clear tonight, there is a heavy fog over town.  The only light is from to incredible orange moon rising to the east, (which I will not be taking a photo of!).  And there must be several generators running on the houseboats, because there is lots of noise outside.  Because ofthe fog I can’t tell where or what the noise is.  For all I know its the jet engine of the WhiteQueen, warming up to take her on her Hawaiian vacation.  Hmm.

  1. It’s ONLY minus 24C with minus 36C windchille here Tandi. Come south for a wee warm up. Warm hugs to you, K

The pure insanity of minus ridiculous temperatures are truly offset by the incredible beauty that comes with them. When we hit the static -40’s the air actually crystallizes and sparkles like magic…magic that can kill you…but magic nonetheless…

Your photos are brilliant. Each and every one of them!
I cannot imagine such cold temps! Poor you not being able to have a hot shower. Brrr…
I’m astonished to see that inspite of the freezing temps your dogs are OK without coats.

The first thing that came to mind were those marvelous winter scenes from Dr. Zhivago. Hoarfrost is magical – but this takes it to a whole new level.

The photo of the dogs is pretty magical, too. In the midst of all that white, they seem to just gleam with warmth and life. Beautiful!
